NHS Foundation Trust – The Coaching Programme

A progressive and dynamic organisation, Leeds Partnerships NHS Foundation Trust strives to develop the leadership capability of its management team.

The Objective

A key initiative within Leeds Mental Health Trust was to enable managers to coach more effectively. This would support change within the Trust and the aim of achieving foundation status. Additionally, the very nature of the work carried out by staff, dealing with mental health issues, places a duty of care on the employer and it was felt that coaching would enable more effective supervision of staff working in these demanding roles.

Our approach

In conjunction with our associates, we designed and delivered a 5 month Coaching Programme leading to the Institute of Leadership & Management, Level 5 Certificate in Coaching & Mentoring.

This was a comprehensive programme involving:

  • workshops
  • practice sessions
  • learning sets
  • pre-post course work
  • additional reading
  • completion of coaching journal
  • 1:1 coaching
  • assignment and assessment

The programme was an immediate success and delegates commenting how “different” this programme was to others they had experienced.

The Outcome

The Trust immediately had a “Pool” of qualified coaches to deploy within the organisation. Structures and processes were implemented to enable this resource to be utilised throughout the organisation. Immediate benefits were:

  • 22 qualified coaches (a further 7 due to qualify in December 2007).
  • 1-1 coaching is provided to all Leadership and Management delegates.
  • Coaching promoted by senior Trust staff.

Since the original programme another Level 5 programme has been completed and the trust was able to offer places to other NHS Trusts throughout the country, thereby generating revenue and recovering their initial investment. Additionally a Level 7 Diploma in executive coaching is now in place.

Leeds Mental Health Trust achieved foundation status on 1st August 2007 and is now known as Leeds Partnerships NHS Foundation Trust.

What they said

The Trust took the decision to place ‘the development of a coaching culture’ as a strategic objective predominantly in response to the really positive feedback received from delegates who had been offered 1-1 coaching sessions as part of the inaugural Level 3 Leadership Programme in 2004. This resulted in the design of the Level 5 Coaching Programme which was first delivered in 2005. The Programme is now in its third year and to date there are 22 qualified coaches within LPFT (Leeds Partnerships NHS Foundation Trust – new title!), with a further 7 due to qualify in December 2007.

1-1 coaching is offered as part of all ILM Programmes within the Trust. The internal coaches, for the first time, are coaching all 45 delegates of this year’s L3 Leadership Programme. As more coaches qualify, it is hoped they will continue to coach delegates from other ILM Programmes – i.e. L5 Leadership and L5 Coaching. Coaching outside of the ILM Programmes has also been provided to more than 40 staff.

The L7 Executive Coaching & Mentoring Programme is being piloted this year with a view to getting senior Trust staff on board in order to further promote the ‘coaching culture’. Also with a view to the Trust becoming a ‘hub’ of West Yorks for management development.

A student from Manchester Business School is currently doing some research into the benefits of coaching within LPFT – this to be submitted by end of September 2007.
