The leading business to business energy provider in the UK is committed to developing and retaining its people.

The Objective

British Gas Business wanted to be seen as the employer of choice whilst establishing its position as the leading business to business utilities provider. A huge part of this was to develop the leadership capability of team leaders, to improve their perception in the business, to be seen to be visible and leading from the front. A tangible outcome from this would be the enhancement of the annual employee engagement scores (ESAT) where employees were specifically asked about qualities of their Team Managers.

Our approach

We designed and delivered a 5 month programme “Learn to Manage” as part of a 3 step approach to developing core Management and Leadership skills. This consisted of 5 modules, Learn To:

  • Manage your Impact
  • Manage our People 
  • Manage Performance and Behaviours
  • Manage through Coaching and Feedback 
  • Manage Yourself

These all emphasised the importance of developing your own leadership style and referred to the Brand Values of British Gas Business. Delegates were tasked with specific activities between sessions, completion of learning journals and were accountable to the group by updating on progress made throughout the programme.

The Outcome

Over 170 Team Managers have completed the programme

ESAT scores improved significantly

British Gas Business listed in Sunday Times Top 100 Best Companies To Work For (No. 26 for 2 years running)

Programme continues to receive great feedback from delegates and their immediate managers.
